Winter/Spring 2016

Introduction to Oil Painting Workshop:

Bring 2  sheets @9 x 12” canvas paper pad to each session. Oil colors, solvents and brushes supplied. 

Beginning Oil Painting Workshop:

Bring (1) 8 x 10″ and (1) 11 x 14″ Ampersand Gesso Bord or canvas to first session, as well as an 11 x 14″ sketchbook, HB and 4B pencils, erasers, and tortillon (blending stump), vine charcoal.  All other supplies provided. If bringing your own supplies for the discounted tuition, this is what you will need:

Solvents: 1 qt oderless turpenoid (or Gamsol), 2.5 oz linseed oil, 2.5 oz damar varnish.

Containers: Metal jar with spring clips for holding turp. HDPE nozzled plastic squirt bottle for holding medium.

Paint: (Recommend Gamblin brand). Titanium white, burnt sienna, ultramarine blue.

Brushes: Round size #1, 4; Brite/Flat size #6, 10; filbert size #6; 1” utility brush. Brushes can be hogs hair, but natural fibers like badger or sable are best.

Tools: *Palette Knife: stainless steel 2 ½” blade, narrow at the tip. Portable palette with lid. T-shirt material for wiping, apron or smock, color wheel.

Plein air Painting Workshops:

Plein air Prep in the Studio:

Bring 1-3 photographs (color and black and white of same scene if possible), of a favorite nature scene that you would like to paint, or use one provided.

11 x 14″ Canvas or panel (gessoed wood or “Ampersand” gesso bord). If drawing, bring similar sized paper or panel of your preference.

Plein air Outing:

Above supplies, canvas or panel of choice, plus a plein air pochade (paint box) and tripod or easel for outdoor painting. Examples will be shown in plein air prep class.

Pastel Drawing Workshop/All Levels:

Faber-Castel half stick pastels are recommended or other suitable soft/chalk pastels, a set of at least 24 pieces. Strathmore Assorted Tints charcoal paper, @ 12 x 18″. Pocket Color Wheel. Hard Eraser.

Classical Portrait Drawing Workshops:

Sketchbook (Strathmore), no smaller than 11 x 14”; Artist’s tape (white); Graphite pencils (H, HB, 2B, 4B, 6B); Drawing board; Pencil sharpener; Kneaded and hard eraser; 12” ruler; Measuring stick (bamboo skewer or knitting needle) or proportional divider/caliper.

Independent Practice:

Supplies at each individual artist’s discretion.

December 2015:

Alla Prima Painting:

Supports: 3 stretched canvas or Ampersand gessobords that are 8 x 10″.

*Paint: (Recommend Gamblin brand) titanium white (large), ivory black, burnt sienna, burnt umber, cadmium yellow light, ultramarine blue.

*Solvents: 1 qt odorless turpenoid (or Gamsol), 2.5 oz linseed oil, 2.5 oz damar varnish.

*Containers: *Metal jar with spring clips for holding turp. HDPE nozzled plastic squirt bottle for holding medium.

*Supports: *1-3 Gessobords (made by Ampersand) sized 8 x 10” and 1-3 sized 11 x 14”.

*Brushes: Round size #1, 4; Brite/Flat size #6, 10; filbert size #6; 1” utility brush. Brushes can be hogs hair, but natural fibers like badger or sable are best.

*Tools: *Palette Knife: stainless steel 2 ½” blade, narrow at the tip. Portable palette with lid. T-shirt material for wiping, apron or smock, color wheel.

*Preparatory: *11 x 14” sketchbook, ebony pencil, vine charcoal.

Drawing:

Classical Portrait:11 x 14” Strathmore sketchbook; graphite pencils HB, 2B, 6B; Vine charcoal; Compressed white & black charcoal pencils; Kneaded and white retractable “pencil” style eraser; Sand paper block.
